Maybe your self-image isn’t all it should be. Hmm … Understandable. Maybe there’d been problems in your life as you grew up, or maybe you went through some really traumatic experiences that scarred you for life. Maybe, if it were reduced to a list of words and phrases, your self-image would be a bit heavy on the less desirable adjectives, such as Afraid, Unforthcoming, Unassuming, Nervous, Timid, Quiet, Shy, Reticent, and the like.

Referring to this blueprint (which is what your subconscious mind routinely does) won’t do you any favours at all. In fact it will only reinforce the weak, negative, ineffectual ideas of yourself that you hold uppermost in your mind.

Carrying around that image of yourself can only retard your progress in life. It will make you feel like a failure. Yep, even if you make what appears to be a success of yourself … you’ll probably still secretly feel like a failure, deep down.

How the self-image develops

Your self-image is built up gradually, over many years, and it is shaped by your life experiences; everything that happens to you, or has ever happened to you, contributes to this detailed, multi-layered, multi-faceted mental blueprint of just exactly who you are. And your subconscious mind constantly refers to this blueprint to make sure that you act entirely in keeping with your own strongly held ideas and beliefs about yourself.

The good news is … you can change things! You can re-engineer your self-image. You can literally rewrite your own self-image blueprint, choosing words that empower you rather than weaken you. You can choose positive, lively, colourful words and phrases that will imbue you with feelings of power and strength and success, rather than stifling you and inhibiting your growth.

And no, this isn’t just wishful thinking. What you focus on routinely really does become ingrained in your mind, and if these are happy, competent, confident and successful thoughts and feelings, then your self-image becomes exactly that … more and more competent, confident and successful.

I’ve put together an Alphabet of Brilliant Characteristics (ABC) for you to take a look at. It’s filled with positive and empowering words and phrases to replace the dull ones you might be presently encumbered with. You can pick and choose any you like to describe yourself. Obviously you can choose others if you like, but these can form a handy reference for you to select from.
